Origin Loop is Origin Energy's virtual power plant program and one of the largest VPPs in Australia with over 10,000 connected batteries. It works with a wide range of battery brands, making it accessible to most battery owners. Origin uses your battery's stored energy during periods of high grid demand, paying you above-market export rates as bill credits.
How Origin Loop VPP works
Once enrolled, Origin's platform monitors wholesale electricity prices and grid demand. When prices spike or AEMO issues demand signals, Origin triggers a VPP event and your battery begins exporting. You can set a minimum reserve level (typically 20%) so you always keep some backup power. Events typically last 1–3 hours and happen most often on hot summer afternoons and cold winter evenings.
Payment structure
VPP event earnings appear as credits on your Origin electricity bill. Export rates during VPP events reach up to 20c/kWh, which is significantly above the standard feed-in tariff (typically 3–7c/kWh in most states). Credits are applied quarterly. Origin also offers an upfront joining bonus for some battery types.
Realistic earnings
Households typically earn $300–$600 per year depending on battery size, location, and grid event frequency. A 10kWh battery in SA or VIC can earn toward the higher end due to more frequent price spikes. NSW tends to be more moderate. Earnings stack on top of your regular solar self-consumption savings.
