Origin Loop VPP Review, October 2026
Origin Loop is Origin Energy’s virtual power plant. If you bring your own battery, Origin now sells it as Origin Battery Lite: Origin pays a $1/kWh bill credit for battery energy it sends to the grid in Loop events, up to 200 kWh a year, plus a $200 sign-up credit. You keep your normal feed-in tariff on top. There is no lock-in contract on this route.

How Origin Loop VPP works
Once your battery is connected, Origin can discharge it to the grid during Loop events, when the grid is short or prices are high. Origin will take at most 200 kWh a year from your battery, and its terms say it aims to leave approximately 20% of the energy stored for most batteries. The rest of the time your battery runs for your home as normal.
Payment structure
Origin credits $1 for each kWh extracted and sent to the grid during Loop events, up to 200 kWh a year, and pays a $200 sign-up credit. Credits go on your Origin electricity bill. Origin’s terms let it change the credit rate with notice. Origin’s terms also include a 5-year agreement for a battery installed by Origin, with an early termination fee, but we could not find a current offer for that route.

What you can earn
The cap sets the ceiling: 200 kWh a year at $1/kWh is $200 a year in event credits, plus the $200 sign-up credit in the first year. Origin describes this as up to $400 in value in the first year. How close you get to the cap depends on how many Loop events Origin runs.

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate needs a VPP-capable battery, but being VPP-capable is not the same as being on Origin Energy's list. Check both before you choose a battery.

Origin Energy says Origin Loop VPP is open in NSW, SA, VIC, QLD, ACT.
How to sign up
You need to be an Origin electricity customer in NSW, SA, Victoria, Queensland or the ACT, with solar of at least 5 kW, a battery of at least 5 kWh, and a battery and inverter on Origin’s compatible list. You sign up for Battery Lite through Origin and it connects to your battery remotely.

Does a VPP reduce battery life?
A little, because each event adds a partial cycle. Origin Loop caps what it takes at 200 kWh a year, which is about 15 full cycles of a 13.5 kWh battery, against the several thousand cycles most warranties allow.
