Assumptions: 4.7 peak sun hours a day (our postcode solar data for 5000) × 365 days × 85% system efficiency. 30% of the generation is used in the home at 42c per kWh, the SA average retail rate in our electricity data, and the rest is exported at 4c to 8c per kWh. Payback is the price after STCs divided by the yearly saving, with no battery, tariff changes or panel degradation. A household that uses more of its solar at home pays back faster.

How much solar Adelaide is installing
In the 12 months to 1 October 2026, 17,638 small solar systems were installed across Greater Adelaide, averaging 10.8 kW each, according to the Clean Energy Regulator's postcode data. That brings the total to 325,256 systems since records began.
Adelaide systems have grown as batteries have become common, because a battery needs surplus solar to fill it. A system sized for daytime use alone is often too small once a battery is added, so size the panels with the battery in mind even if the battery comes later.
Local considerations
SA has a single electricity distributor (SA Power Networks) which simplifies connections, but the grid is increasingly congested with solar exports.
The SA Home Battery Scheme closed in 2022 and the state's virtual power plant incentive is now limited to priority applicants, so do not let a salesperson price a battery on a state subsidy you may not get. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate still applies.
Adelaide's older housing stock (especially in inner suburbs) often needs switchboard upgrades. Get this included in your initial quote.
Adelaide summers bring runs of very hot days, and panel output falls as panels heat up. Ask about the temperature coefficient of the panels quoted and a mounting system that leaves an air gap under the array.
Electricity networks and export limits

SA Power Networks asks every new system to be capable of flexible exports. Take them up and your export limit moves with the network, anywhere from 0 kW to 10 kW per phase depending on how much room the grid has; decline and you get a fixed limit of 1.5 kW. Most households are better off with flexible exports.
South Australia also requires new systems to be capable of being switched off remotely in a grid emergency, so the inverter on your quote has to support it. Retail feed-in rates vary widely between plans, so compare once the system is in.

The federal STC rebate on that system in Adelaide (STC Zone 3) is worth about $1,710 this year, which brings the price to about $3,590 to $5,290. A 10 kW system is typically $7,800 to $10,200 before the rebate and $5,178 to $7,578 after it. Retailers usually take the STC value off the quote for you. What is the 20% rule for solar?
It is a rule of thumb for sizing panels against the inverter: fit around 20 to 33 percent more panel capacity than the inverter is rated for. Panels rarely deliver their full rating on a roof, because heat, dust and the angle of the sun all take a share, so a slightly larger array keeps the inverter working close to capacity for more of the day. The Clean Energy Council's rules allow panels up to a third larger than the inverter, which is why a 5 kW inverter is usually paired with 6.6 kW of panels and a 10 kW inverter with up to 13.3 kW. Oversize beyond that and the system is not eligible for STCs. Ask your installer to show the panel-to-inverter ratio on the quote.
Why are people getting rid of their solar panels?
Mostly they are not giving up on solar, they are replacing a bad system or a small old one. The common stories are an installer that went broke and left nobody to honour the warranty, a cheap inverter that failed after a few years, panels mounted badly enough to leak or come loose, and an export limit that stops a large system earning what the salesperson promised. How much does a solar installer charge?
Installers price the whole job rather than charging for labour separately. The quote covers the panels, inverter, mounting, cabling, the electrician's time, the connection paperwork and the STC claim.
