Synergy Battery Rewards Review
Synergy Battery Rewards is the primary VPP program available to Western Australian homeowners. Synergy is WA's government-owned electricity provider serving the South West Interconnected System (SWIS), which operates completely separately from the eastern states NEM grid. The program pays 70c/kWh during activation events — the highest guaranteed per-kWh rate of any utility VPP in Australia — and also compensates households for the standby window before each event. Participation requires holding a compatible battery through the WA State Government Battery Rebate Scheme.
How Synergy Battery Rewards works
Synergy remotely monitors and controls your battery during activation events. Events occur during peak demand periods, typically between 3pm and 9pm on extremely hot or cold days. Your battery automatically discharges to the grid during the activation window. You earn 70c/kWh for each kWh exported. Synergy also pays energy offset credits to cover any import costs you incur during the approximately 2-hour standby window before each event, when your battery is kept charged in preparation. You can set a minimum battery reserve so essential backup power remains available.
Payment structure
70c/kWh activation credits are applied to your Synergy bill after each event. Separate energy offset credits compensate for standby window import costs. Annual earnings depend on how many events are triggered: at 30 events per year with a 10kWh battery exporting ~7kWh per event, maximum credits reach approximately $147 from activations alone. Combined with standby compensation and the fact that WA winters and summers both drive events, realistic annual total earnings sit at $150–$350.
Realistic earnings
With up to 30 activation events per year and a 70c/kWh credit rate, a 10kWh battery can earn $150–$350 annually depending on how many events Synergy triggers. WA's SWIS grid has moderate volatility compared to eastern states — fewer extreme heat events than SA or VIC, but winter cold snaps and summer peaks do drive activations. The 70c/kWh rate is significantly higher than most eastern states retailer VPPs, which partly compensates for lower event frequency.
