Solar Batteries WA 2026: Synergy, Horizon and Federal Rebates

Western Australia runs two parallel battery rebate schemes alongside the federal program: a smaller subsidy for Synergy customers in the South West Interconnected System, and a much larger one for Horizon Power customers in regional and remote WA. Stack with the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate and Horizon households can save over $6,300 on a 10 kWh install, the most generous combination in Australia.

Why batteries make sense in Western Australia

WA has Australia's highest solar resource (5.2 to 5.8 peak sun hours per day) and a unique two-utility structure: Synergy serves the South West Interconnected System (Perth metro and surrounds) and Horizon Power serves regional and remote WA. Both have introduced battery subsidies as part of the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme to manage growing rooftop solar in their networks. The result is the most generous battery rebate stacking in Australia, particularly for Horizon Power customers in places like Karratha, Kalgoorlie and Broome where battery storage is genuinely strategic for grid stability.

What you can claim in WA

WA homeowners stack the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program with the WA Battery Scheme. The federal portion under tiered rates since 1 May 2026 provides around $252 per kWh on the first 14 kWh ($2,520 for a 10 kWh battery, $3,400 for 13.5 kWh). The WA portion depends on which utility serves your home: Synergy customers receive $130 per kWh up to 10 kWh ($1,300 maximum), while Horizon Power customers receive $380 per kWh up to 10 kWh ($3,800 maximum). Combined, a Synergy customer can save around $3,820 on a 10 kWh install; a Horizon Power customer can save $6,320 on the same install. Both schemes require enrolment in an approved Virtual Power Plant.

Which battery should you buy in WA?

Tesla Powerwall 3 and Sungrow SBR are the most-installed batteries in WA. Tesla's direct presence in Perth makes warranty service straightforward. Sungrow offers better value per kWh and excellent thermal management for the hot WA summers. BYD Battery-Box Premium has strong installer support in Perth. For Horizon Power customers in remote areas, ruggedness and cyclone-rating matter more; consider IP65-rated enclosures and outdoor-mountable units. Most WA households with 6.6 to 10 kW solar benefit from 10 to 13.5 kWh of storage. The WA Battery Scheme caps subsidy at 10 kWh, so going larger only earns the federal portion on the additional capacity.

BatteryCapacityFederal rebatePrice after rebate

What installation looks like in Perth and beyond

Perth metro installations typically add $1,500 to $2,500 on top of battery hardware. Regional WA installations can run $3,000 to $5,000 in additional logistics, particularly for remote sites accessible only by long road transport. Both Synergy and Horizon Power require VPP-capable commissioning and approved installer accreditation. Western Power network applications can take 2 to 4 weeks. Demand surged through 2025 and remains elevated; metro Perth installer lead times of 4 to 8 weeks are common in 2026.
