Solar Batteries ACT 2026: Loan, Rebate and What to Buy

The ACT has Australia's most generous combination of solar and battery incentives. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate provides the upfront discount, and the ACT Sustainable Household Scheme provides interest-free loans of up to $15,000 to cover the rest. Combined, a Canberra household can install a battery with little to no upfront cost, repaid through their rates over a decade.

Why batteries make sense in Australian Capital Territory

The ACT has the highest solar rebate in Australia for new installations and one of the strongest battery support frameworks. Canberra electricity prices around 28 to 32 cents per kWh on peak make battery arbitrage worthwhile, but the bigger story is the Sustainable Household Scheme interest-free loan. A Canberra household can effectively install a battery with zero upfront cost and pay it back through quarterly rates, replacing a chunk of their electricity bill with loan repayments while building equity in the system. For households on existing solar, payback typically lands at 7 to 10 years on the federal rebate alone.

What you can claim in ACT

ACT homeowners stack the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program with the ACT Sustainable Household Scheme interest-free loan. The federal portion under tiered rates since 1 May 2026 provides around $252 per kWh on the first 14 kWh (about $2,520 off a 10 kWh battery, $3,400 off a 13.5 kWh battery). The Sustainable Household Scheme provides interest-free loans of up to $15,000 for battery storage (and other electrification upgrades), repaid through your rates over a fixed period. The two combine well: federal rebate reduces the purchase price, the loan covers the remaining cost interest-free. There is no separate ACT state battery rebate at present.

Which battery should you buy in ACT?

Tesla Powerwall 3 and Sungrow SBR are the most-installed batteries in the ACT. Tesla's integration with the broader Tesla Energy Plan VPP is solid in Canberra. Sungrow offers the best value per kWh and works well with the cooler ACT climate (lithium chemistry favours cooler ambient temperatures, so battery longevity in Canberra is generally favourable). For homes with existing Fronius or Enphase solar, matching battery brands can simplify installation and warranty service. Most Canberra households with 6.6 to 13 kW solar benefit from 10 to 13.5 kWh of usable storage.

Alpha ESS SMILE55.7–34.2 kWh$1,400–$5,900$6,800–$11,000

Final price ranges include installation. Federal rebate values reflect the tiered structure in effect since 1 May 2026.

What installation looks like in Canberra and beyond

Canberra installations typically add $1,500 to $2,500 on top of battery hardware. Evoenergy (the local distributor) requires VPP-capable commissioning and has been actively building export limit allowances as battery uptake increases. The Sustainable Household Scheme application process takes 2 to 4 weeks; many installers manage the application on your behalf. Installer capacity is reasonable in the ACT, with typical lead times of 4 to 6 weeks.
