How much can you save on a battery in South Australia?

Here is what a typical battery installation looks like in SA after all available rebates are applied.

Example: Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh)

Typical battery + installation cost$11,000
Federal rebate (Cheaper Home Batteries)-$3,400
Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS) VPP Connection-$2,050
Your price$5,550

*Estimate only. Actual price varies by installer, configuration, and location within SA.

What is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program?

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries program is a $7.2 billion initiative providing approximately $252 per kWh (~30% off) on the first 14 kWh of an eligible battery system. It is available to all Australian homeowners with solar when using a SAA-accredited installer.

Since 1 May 2026, tiered rates apply: the first 14 kWh receives 100% of the STC factor, 14 to 28 kWh receives 60%, and 28 to 50 kWh receives 15%. The STC factor steps down again on 1 January 2027 and every six months until the program closes in 2030, so installing sooner secures a larger discount.

SA Battery Rebate FAQ

helpWhat is the solar battery rebate in South Australia for 2026?

SA homeowners can stack the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate (approximately $2,520 for 10kWh) with the REPS VPP incentive (up to $2,050). That is $5,050+ off your battery installation, one of the best deals in Australia.

helpWhat is the REPS VPP rebate in South Australia?

The Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS) provides rebates of up to $2,050 when you connect your battery to an approved Virtual Power Plant. Participating providers include AGL, Origin, Tesla, and others. The VPP allows your battery to support the grid during peak demand in exchange for the rebate.

helpCan I stack the SA VPP rebate with the federal battery rebate?

Yes. The REPS VPP rebate and the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate are fully stackable. A typical 10kWh battery could receive $2,520 federal + $2,050 REPS = $5,050+ total savings.

helpDo I have to join a VPP to get the SA battery rebate?

You do not need to join a VPP to get the federal rebate of approximately $2,520. However, the additional REPS incentive of up to $2,050 requires VPP enrolment. Most VPP programs have minimal impact on your daily battery usage.

helpHow much does a battery cost in SA after all rebates?

With both the federal and REPS rebates, a 13.5kWh Tesla Powerwall 3 could cost as little as $5,650 (down from $11,000). A 10kWh system could drop to around $5,950. These are among the lowest battery prices in Australia thanks to SA's generous stacking.
