Who Is 1KOMMA5°?
1KOMMA5° launched in Germany in 2021 with a specific thesis: the transition to home electrification (solar, battery, EV, heat pump) is not just a hardware problem, it is a software and service problem. The company's name references the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C warming limit, signalling its climate-driven mission. It has since expanded aggressively across Europe and entered Australia, where it operates as both an installer and an ongoing energy service provider.
The Heartbeat platform — their proprietary AI energy management system — is what distinguishes 1KOMMA5° from most battery installers. Traditional installers sell you hardware and configure it to charge from solar and discharge at night. 1KOMMA5° layers continuous software optimisation on top: the system learns your consumption patterns, monitors weather forecasts, tracks electricity tariff schedules, and adjusts energy flows accordingly.
The Heartbeat Platform: What the AI Actually Does
On a simple time-of-use tariff, a standard battery management system can be configured with rules: charge from solar during the day, discharge during the expensive evening peak, avoid drawing from the grid during peak hours. This is effective but static.
Heartbeat goes further. It can predict that tomorrow will be cloudy (from weather forecasts) and decide to charge the battery from cheap overnight grid electricity tonight rather than relying on tomorrow's solar. On a very sunny day with a large surplus forecast, it might pre-heat your hot water system or pre-cool the house before the day gets hot, reducing evening load. For households on dynamic tariffs like Amber Electric, where spot prices change every 30 minutes, Heartbeat can act as an automated arbitrage system: charging during negative or very low price periods and discharging or exporting when prices spike.
The financial value of this optimisation depends heavily on your tariff structure. On a flat-rate tariff with a consistent feed-in rate, the advantage over a well-configured standard battery is modest. On a time-of-use or dynamic tariff with meaningful price spread, the AI management can generate materially better returns.
Hardware: What You Are Actually Getting
Beneath the Heartbeat software sits proven hardware. The battery cells used in the Heartbeat system are lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) — the same chemistry used by Sungrow, BYD, GoodWe, and most other reputable home batteries. LiFePO4 is preferred for home storage due to its thermal stability (lower fire risk), long cycle life (typically 6,000 to 10,000 cycles), and broad operating temperature range. 1KOMMA5° sources cells from BYD, the world's largest battery manufacturer, giving the underlying hardware credibility independent of the 1KOMMA5° brand.
The solar panels and inverters offered through 1KOMMA5° packages come from established tier-1 manufacturers. Ask your consultant to specify exactly which panels, inverter, and battery modules will be installed before signing — the Heartbeat branding should not obscure the underlying hardware specifications.
Pricing and How to Evaluate It
1KOMMA5° does not publish standard price lists, which makes comparison shopping harder than with a quoted Sungrow or Tesla system. The package-based pricing model means you are paying for hardware, installation, the Heartbeat platform, and ongoing monitoring as a bundle. When requesting a quote, ask for:
- Itemised hardware: panel model and wattage, inverter model, battery modules and total usable capacity
- Whether the federal CHB battery rebate is included in the quoted price as a point-of-sale discount
- The monthly or annual cost of the Heartbeat platform (ongoing subscription, if any)
- Workmanship warranty duration and who backs it
- CEC accreditation number of the installing team
Compare the total cost against what the same hardware would cost through an independent installer without the Heartbeat layer. The premium for Heartbeat is only justified if the AI optimisation returns more than its cost through improved energy management over the system's life.
Who 1KOMMA5° Suits Best
The Heartbeat value proposition is strongest for households that are on dynamic or time-of-use electricity tariffs and who want a hands-off, fully managed energy system. If you are comfortable with technology, engaged with energy markets, and want the software to actively trade your battery's energy for maximum financial return, the Heartbeat platform delivers real value.
If you are on a simple flat-rate tariff, primarily want to maximise solar self-consumption, and are comfortable managing a standard inverter app, a well-specified Sungrow or GoodWe system will likely deliver comparable returns at a lower total cost. The AI layer's value diminishes when the underlying tariff structure offers limited arbitrage opportunity.
