Why WA is Australia’s best state for batteries

    Launched in July 2025, WA's scheme is the newest in Australia, with fresh funding and a government that wants households on batteries.

  2. $10,000 interest-free loan

    Synergy customers can get a $10,000 interest-free loan repaid over 4 years through their electricity bill, which makes a battery effectively $0 upfront.

  3. Highest rebate for regional WA

    Horizon Power customers in regional and remote areas receive $380/kWh (up to $3,800), the highest per-kWh state battery rebate in Australia.

  4. Abundant solar generation

    Perth averages 5.3 peak sun hours a day. WA generates more excess solar per household than any other state, so a battery has plenty to store.

  5. VPP earnings

    VPP participation is mandatory under the WA scheme, and it pays: $300 to $800 or more a year in VPP credits on top of your rebate.

Federal Cheaper Home Batteries program

Every WA resident can also claim the federal battery rebate on top of the state scheme. Since 1 May 2026 the program has used tiered rates: about $258/kWh on the first 14 kWh, 60% of that rate on the next 14 kWh, then 15% beyond that.

  • About $2,584 for a 10kWh battery at current rebate rates.
  • Applied at point of sale, so there is no waiting for a reimbursement.
  • Tiered rates since 1 May 2026: the first 14kWh at 100%, 14 to 28kWh at 60%, 28 to 50kWh at 15%. The next step-down is on 1 January 2027.

The WA battery rebate depends on your electricity retailer. Synergy customers receive $130/kWh up to 10kWh ($1,300 maximum) plus access to a $10,000 interest-free loan. Horizon Power customers receive $380/kWh up to 10kWh ($3,800 maximum). Both can be stacked with the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate of approximately $2,584 for a 10kWh system.
What is the difference between Synergy and Horizon Power battery rebates?
Synergy covers the South West Interconnected System (SWIS), including Perth, Mandurah and the south-west. Synergy customers get $130/kWh (up to $1,300) plus a $10,000 interest-free loan. Horizon Power covers regional and remote WA and offers $380/kWh (up to $3,800) with no loan component, reflecting the higher value of battery storage in off-grid and fringe-of-grid areas.
Do I have to join a VPP to get the WA battery rebate?
Yes. Joining a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program is mandatory to receive the WA battery rebate. Your battery may be called on to discharge energy back to the grid during peak demand. In return, you receive the upfront rebate and may earn additional VPP credits of $300 to $800 a year.
Can I stack the WA battery rebate with the federal rebate?
Yes. The WA battery scheme and the federal Cheaper Home Batteries program are fully stackable. For a Synergy customer with a 10kWh battery, that means $1,300 (WA) plus about $2,584 (federal), or $3,884 in rebates, plus access to a $10,000 interest-free loan. Horizon Power customers can receive $3,800 plus about $2,584, or $6,384 in combined rebates.
What is the $10,000 interest-free loan for WA batteries?
Synergy customers who install an eligible battery through the WA battery scheme can get a $10,000 interest-free loan repaid over 4 years through their electricity bill. Combined with the WA and federal rebates, it removes the upfront cost of a battery. Horizon Power customers are not eligible for the loan component.
When did the WA battery scheme launch and how long will it last?
The WA Residential Battery Scheme launched in July 2025. The program is funded through to 2028, but allocations are limited and may close early if demand exceeds supply. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries program runs through 2030, with tiered rates in effect since 1 May 2026 and the next STC factor step-down on 1 January 2027.
Am I eligible for the WA battery rebate?
To be eligible, you must be a residential customer of Synergy or Horizon Power, install a CEC-approved battery system of at least 5kWh capacity, use an accredited installer, and agree to participate in a VPP program. You must also have an existing solar system or install one at the same time. The property must be owner-occupied or have landlord approval.
