ACT rebates for solar and batteries

The Home Energy Support Program pays concession card holders up to $5,000 on rooftop solar and one other upgrade, such as heat pump hot water. Batteries are not eligible for it: the federal battery rebate is the discount on a battery, and the Sustainable Household Scheme lends up to $20,000 at 3% interest over up to 10 years towards one.

Solar in the ACT: questions people ask

What is the 20% rule for solar panels?
It is the rule of thumb that the panels should be rated 20 to 33 per cent above the inverter, such as 6.6 kW of panels on a 5 kW inverter. Panels rarely produce their full rating, so a slightly larger array keeps the inverter working near its capacity for more of the day. A system only earns STCs if the panels are no more than a third larger than the inverter, which is why 13.3 kW is the largest array on a 10 kW single-phase inverter.
Why are people getting rid of their solar panels?
Often to upgrade rather than give up on solar, because systems have grown a lot. The average system installed in the ACT in 2011 was 2.5 kW; in the 12 months to October 2026 it was 12.1 kW (Clean Energy Regulator). An early system is small and often past its inverter's working life. Some owners also replace a system because the company that installed it has closed and nobody will service it.
