Victoria's wide gap between peak and off-peak prices makes a battery one of the better buys for a Melbourne home. The Solar Victoria battery loan has closed, but the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate (about $2,584 on a 10kWh battery) still takes a large slice off the price. With peak rates of 40 to 55c/kWh, a 10kWh battery can save $80 to $120 a month by shifting when you use power.

Victoria's spreads are among Australia's highest: 40 to 55c/kWh at peak against 15 to 20c/kWh off-peak. Charge the battery from solar or cheap off-peak power, then run the house on it through the expensive hours.
