Households in South Australia can currently stack two federal programs: the solar STC rebate, which comes off your quote up front, and the Cheaper Home Batteries discount on the battery. Here is what that is worth on one specific system, a 13.3kW single-phase solar array with a 14kWh battery, which is the largest setup a normal single-phase home can install.

Other SA incentives, and who actually qualifies

These are real, but they are conditional, so they are deliberately left out of the total above. Check the conditions before you count on one.

  • REPS Virtual Power Plant incentive: up to $2,050(currently restricted)
    • Currently limited to priority applicants such as concession card holders and tenants, with general household funding exhausted
    • The maximum $2,050 requires a battery of around 28kWh, far larger than a typical home battery
    • The battery must be connected to an approved Virtual Power Plant
    • The incentive is applied by the VPP operator as a discount, not paid to you
  • City of Adelaide council battery rebate: up to $1,000
    • 50% of the installed cost, capped at $1,000
    • City of Adelaide council area only, which is postcodes 5000 and 5006
    • The battery must be coupled with a solar PV system

The SA Home Battery Scheme closed to new applications in 2022, so SA households claim the federal programs. South Australia’s remaining incentives are conditional rather than automatic: see the notes below the table.

The federal battery rebate steps down next on 1 January 2027, and the STC deeming period shortens every January until the program ends in 2030, so the same system attracts a little less rebate each year you wait. The federal solar rebate is not a cash payment from government. It is a number of small-scale technology certificates (STCs) your system creates, which your installer trades and applies to your quote as an upfront discount. The value moves with the certificate market.

The world's rooftop solar capital plays by its own rules

South Australia has more rooftop solar per household than anywhere in the world, and the grid has had to adapt. SA Power Networks now requires new installations to be capable of flexible exports. Whether you actually use them is your choice, and the choice is worth more than most people realise. Opt in and your export limit moves with grid conditions, from 0 up to 10kW per phase. Stay on the fixed alternative and you are capped at 1.5kW, or at zero export on some connections.

That changes what a good install looks like. Your inverter has to support dynamic export control, the connection has to be registered correctly with SA Power Networks, and the system should be designed so curtailed energy goes into a battery instead of being lost. Batteries earn their keep in South Australia

A battery in Adelaide does the usual job of storing cheap daytime solar to run the evening peak. SA is also the heartland of the Virtual Power Plant: sign your battery up to a VPP such as the Tesla Energy Plan, AGL VPP or Origin Loop and it earns credits by supporting the grid during price spikes.

There is also a REPS incentive of up to $2,050 for connecting an eligible battery to a VPP, but be careful with that number. General household funding is currently exhausted, and applications are limited to priority applicants such as concession card holders and tenants. The full $2,050 also assumes a battery of around 28kWh, several times the size of a typical home battery. If you are an owner-occupier putting in a normal battery, plan your numbers without it and treat it as upside if you qualify.

SA retailers price for storage anyway: several offer a "solar sponge" tariff with cheap electricity in the middle of the day, when the state's rooftop solar floods the grid, and steep prices in the evening. With feed-in tariffs for plain exports sitting around 5 to 8 cents, the money in SA solar has shifted from exporting to storing. What are flexible exports and how do they affect my solar?
